ALBERT MOSES (Kehimkar) (z"l)
Born: January 1903 in Bombay, India
Married: Elizabeth Elijah Bhorapkar (z”l)
Children: Joyce, Jessica and Abraham
Albert Moses (Kehimkar) (z”l) is one of the direct descendants of Haeem Samuel Kehimkar (z”l) who wrote the first book on the History of the Bene Israel of India.
In 1970, when Albert and his wife, Lizzie visited Toronto to see their son, Abe, he learned from his cousin, Elijah Hyams (Kehimkar) (z”l) that most Bene Israel families living in the greater Toronto area had not attended any services at the local synagogues, primarily because the fees were high for new immigrants. Albert, with Elijah and Ann Samson, arranged affordable High Holy Day services.
In the late 1970’s, Albert and Lizzie immigrated to Canada and settled in Mississauga. Albert actively joined the group that was working to organize High Holiday Services in 1979.
In 1981, he was one of three founding members who signed documents in Toronto, registering Congregation BINA as a charitable organization. He served as the first President of the organization, and in the early years, was one of the readers who led services.
Albert and Lizzie also joined the Solel Congregation in Mississauga, where he was warmly received by the Rabbi and members of the congregation. He regularly chanted Haftorah on Shabbat and other holidays. He introduced the Solel Congregation to the Bene Israel melody of El Nora, the prayer sung at the beginning of the Ne’ilah Service on Yom Kippur. They use this melody in their service to this day.
Albert Moses (z”l) passed away in Toronto in 1983. Following his passing, the Soleil Congregation set up the Albert Moses Scholarship in his memory. This scholarship is awarded to the Jewish student from the Solel school who exemplifies hard work and outstanding achievement in Jewish studies.
His legacy lives on in Congregation BINA and Solel.
